The Last Laugh and the Last Kingdom

To have the last laugh is a term that denotes confounding those who’ve doubted someone and ultimate vindication after a spell of disregard.

Incidentally—in the Scriptures—God is the one who has the ultimate last laugh, when the kings of the Earth come together to fight Him and think they can win when doing so in the last days.

“Why do the nations rage, and the peoples plot in vain? The kings of the earth set themselves,

and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord, and against His Anointed, saying,

‘Let us burst their bonds apart and cast away their cords from us.’ He who sits in the heavens laughs—the Lord holds them in derision. Then He will speak to them in His wrath and terrify them in His fury, saying, As for me, I have set My King on Zion, My holy hill.’ I will tell of the decree—The Lord said to me, ‘You are my Son; today I have begotten you. Ask of Me, and I will make the nations Your heritage, and the ends of the earth Your possession. You shall break them with a rod of iron and dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.’ Now therefore, O kings, be wise; be warned, O rulers of the earth. Serve the Lord with fear and rejoice with trembling.

Kiss the Son, lest He be angry, and you perish in the way, for His wrath is quickly kindled.

Blessed are all who take refuge in Him” (Psalm 2:1-12 [ESV]).

In these verses, God is the one speaking about the Son of God. Interestingly, this was written hundreds of years before the New Testament had been compiled—yet we have a mention of the Son of God.

Some rabbis, like Tovia Singer, insist this must be a misreading of the Hebrew. Well, after studying the Hebrew, he’s incorrect. NASHEKU BAR means Kiss the Son, not “arm yourself with purity.” I don’t know how anyone listens to anti-missionaries.

Back to the point, God installs His Son as King of Kings on Zion, the holy mountain.

God is a Zionist, and cares for His wayward people, Israel. If Israel has not come to the full knowledge of the King of the Jews, that’s okay. In time, they will return to Him and realize they had their Messiah crucified in one of history’s greatest blunders, a blunder that shows the foolishness of God is above the wisdom of humans, leading to the cross and our salvation.

God is the one who will laugh last and destroy Israel’s enemies to usher in a thousand years of true peace.

After thousands of years of mockery, thousands of years of disdain, thousands of years of doubt, humanity will see the salvation of the LORD in Jesus.

The Day of the LORD is a dark and gloomy time, and unbelievers won’t be laughing anymore. The LORD alone will be exalted in that day (Isaiah 2).

I hope many people who claim to follow our Messiah realize that going against the people of Israel is to go against the very promises of God.

Jewish space laser theories aside, the truth remains that salvation comes from the Jews.

Jesus states it clearly.

“You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews” (John 4:22 [ESV]).

Through Abraham’s seed all nations shall be blessed.

And it will be God Himself and the Hebrew people having the last laugh. I wouldn’t be so quick to just dismiss things because they seem preposterous. Our God is the type to confound the wisdom of this world.

“This is what the LORD of Hosts says: ‘In those days ten men from the nations of every tongue will tightly grasp the robe of a Jew, saying, ‘Let us go with you, for we have heard that God is with you’” (Zechariah 8:23 [ESV]).

Things are only funny to humans until they’re not.

The truth is, Israel will be restored, and Jesus will rule from Israel on His throne in Jerusalem.

And then, everyone will have the last laugh of pure joy, because the horrors of war will be over, true peace will stream to all people, and real prosperity will begin for all time, barring Satan’s final test at the end of the Millennium.

Keep a sober heart and treat others with kindness. You don’t want to be on the receiving end of God laughing at man’s plans.

May you walk with humility and joy, and especially with shalom.
