Perfect Love Despite Our Shortcomings
The Hebrew word “hesed” means a loyal affection unlike any other, a perfect faithfulness, and love without equal which isn’t necessarily deserved on our part. It is Strong’s 2617, and while it has the opposite meaning in some contexts, seeing as it is a tough word to translate, the main meaning is that perfect love and faithfulness of the Almighty to humanity despite our shortcomings.
God’s love for humanity is this type of love without question.
He saves us based on grace, not on any works that we might do, even if having works determines our eternal rewards.
God remembers us. He is faithful to us because He cannot deny Himself and be found faithless.
If the world overlooks you, know that God has not overlooked you.
If you repent of your sins and come to Him, whether broken or whole, He will show you He remembers you.
God is in the business of confounding the wise, of uprooting conventions. Remember when He chose David out of all his other brothers? The least likely hero was the one that God had picked.
God works in unconventional and mysterious ways.
If you keep His commandments and love His Torah, He shall bless you with favor and understanding.
We are loved by our Creator. The same Jesus who walked the shores of the Dead Sea in ancient times is the same one who would reach out to the lost in our generation.
Many Christians shun away people with tattoos (which isn’t a sin if it’s not for the dead), people with piercings, women caught up in unsavory work, and anyone else they don’t deem “fit” enough to save.
I’m not saying all believers are like this, not in the slightest. But many believers miss Jesus’s heart on these people who aren’t in the normal standards of society at large.
They toss gay people to the side, even though heterosexual people struggle with sexual sin as much as they do in normal life, only in reverse. I’ve spoken much on this topic elsewhere on this site, but it’s worth a mention that Jesus invited those in the world deemed sick by Christian standards to come and taste the good and refreshing water of His love.
God remembers each of us. He knows how many hairs are currently on my head, which is mind-bending to think about since there are billions of people on this planet that He also knows that number about.
Christians were the original punks, the original alternative people.
The governments shook at them, this strange community of people that treated each other with a love that hadn’t been seen before.
But they became prominent and efficient at affecting the world around them because they knew the ultimate truth that God had always remembered them with His perfect love.
Keep it in the back of your mind, understanding God does not forget us because He has perfect faithfulness to those who choose to be called by His name.
We are more than conquerors, more than victorious over sins when we put as much faithful love for Him as He does into us.
The God of All Creation does not forget us, so neither should we forget Him.
Deep down, He knows you’re thankful for the food He has provided even if you don’t always say grace (most Hebrews say it after the meal—known as Borei Nefashot—not before, by the way).
But it is always best to bring God to mind when doing anything in this life. To pray before our work, for example, or to thank Him for our rest.
Whatever we do, we must do it for the glory of God, who does not forget us.
Let us always remember Him and show our faithful love and hesed, to increase our years and come closer to the One who made all things.
