Space Travel Before Christ Returns? Maybe.

The following is eisegetical speculation. It is not based on solid exegetical methods. But the point can be made either way.

The Bible seems to be silent about human space travel.

But is it?

Does the Bible actually have something to say about humans entering heaven (outer space)?

“You have given him dominion over the works of your hands; you have put all things under his feet” (Psalm 8:6 [ESV]).

This scripture might prove such a case, but the problem is the context is man being made lower than the heavenly beings and having dominion over things on Earth.

But we’ve landed on the moon.

So does that mean we defy this scripture by going back, using the Artemis II mission as a springboard?

No.

The context of Psalm 8 is man’s station in relation to God, where the psalmist questions our importance contrasted with the almost infinite (or infinite from our perspective) heavens.

But nothing in the Bible says we can’t visit space before the Second Coming of Christ.

If the Second Coming happens in 2756, where will we be? Will we have made some advancements to propel us toward Alpha Centauri?

Only time will tell.

The society of the end times seems to have strange living conditions we don’t. Revelation seems to imply humanity will also inhabit the seas. That’s one interpretation, and let it be known I’m not dogmatic on that.

The man commonly known as the Antichrist attacks heavenly beings and drags them down. How does he do this if he doesn’t have some sort of technology that allows this? I suppose a case might be made that he’s a supernatural being himself, but that’s mere speculation.

“Yea, it exerteth unto the host of the heavens, and causeth to fall to the earth of the host, and of the stars, and trampleth them down” (Daniel 8:10 [YLT]).

Using the YLT translation, notice it states those who live in the heavens, not that they are stars alone (a euphemism for angels in some prophetic texts).

The Antichrist king will attack heaven itself and be successful in some capacity.

This event is one reason I believe the end times are further out than most would like.

This could imply something more toward a space station, rather than interstellar colonization.

Though it mentions angels, and mentions the Antichrist also attacks God’s heavenly Temple.

How could such a human do this unless they had some sort of technology?

I believe in exegesis when it comes to studying the Bible. What I am doing here is eisegesis mixed with speculation. I do not hold these ideas as pure truth—only as possibilities.

We have a possible off-Earth population of people in view here.

But the most interesting thing about the notion that humanity could expand into the cosmos is found in Matthew 24 and Mark 13.

“And then He shall send His messengers, and gather together His chosen from the four winds, from the end of the earth unto the end of heaven” (Mark 13:27 [YLT]).

But is that really the case? I’d love for this idea to be true, to expand out there, but the problem with thinking we’ll be on some colony in Andromeda somewhere is that the Greek word ouranos is used, not kosmos. Kosmos is the Greek word for the astronomical heavens, and ouranos CAN refer to them, but can also mean the skies.

Upon further thought, it is a possibility, but not something you can responsibly and exegetically conclude from the Scriptures.

So we might have a space station or colony of some kind, like The 100, but it doesn’t seem likely we will leave Earth en masse for the cosmos.

If every eye will see Him, and the punishments of the end times are to humans on Earth, then it seems unlikely we will spread outward to other star systems. Not that an omnipresent being needs to be limited by light-years.

However, regarding the new heavens and new Earth, we will have eternity. I don’t see why we wouldn’t be able to cross the heavens at that point.

This is getting more into Mormon-type speculation, but the universe is a gigantic place, and how much bigger will the new creation be?

In short, I believe it could happen, but the more likely scenario is that we will be here on Earth for quite a while.

But it’s fun to speculate about such possibilities, isn’t it?

Shalom and blessings to you!
