Philosophical Musings About Why God Must Exist (Not Scientific, but Worthy of Pondering)
The following post is not about scientific reasons God may or may not exist. But I believe these philosophical points make a solid case that higher intelligence has, in fact, created the universe (active voice here is intentional because of the causal nature of God). Can we even codify enough information to understand God? Perhaps not.
But think about these points I will raise and see if you don’t start thinking things through.
These are philosophical points, and experiential, not scientific.
I believe most scientists believing in a higher power have something to say to the atheists out there, however. The evidence points to design.
Light Pierces the Darkness
Light is one proof of God that many of us take for granted. What is the point of light, really? What purpose would it serve in a non-created, self-making universe? If everything was dark, it wouldn’t matter, as no consciousness exists to verify that fact in such a place.
There’s no point in light without beings to bear witness to the light. The opposition of darkness and light tells us something about life on this planet, as well as something about God. It is He who brings the light, and, to reverse quote Albert Pike, “Doubt it not.”
Darkness in a mindless universe means just as little as light would. The concepts wouldn’t matter.
The Constellations
The constellations way above us tell the story of the gospel in some respects. But I might point out something about them. Orion has a dog that follows him.
Look up at the night sky in the northern hemisphere during fall and winter, and you’ll notice a most peculiar pair taking up the sky. There are other constellations in this group, but if the universe wasn’t created, why is there a hunter with a bow (the asterism of stars making up his bow can’t be random)? And why is the dog following him? You’re telling me that was random? My mind is seeing patterns where there are none?
You’d have to be an imbecile to think that was placed there randomly, seeing as the Earth is moving through the Milky Way at a perfect distance in one of its arms to see that constellation pair.
Orion even has a sword in a scabbard; with a beautiful nebula (M42), a cloud I’ve seen many times through my telescope and binoculars. The vibrant red and pink hues show the limitless artistic sensibilities of our Creator.
Ask yourself. Why is there clearly a dog following a hunting man in the sky? This would be meaningless in a universe without intelligent life, specifically our planet. Dogs exist on Earth (I don’t know about other planets out there, but it means something to humans on Earth specifically).
Having that massive constellation pair up there only increases my faith.
Gravity Keeps Us on Earth and Black Holes Show Power
Gravity is a binding force of power in the universe caused by the curvature of spacetime. It causes objects to attract and pull at each other. Black holes are singularities with a mass so strong not even light can escape their gravitational pull.
Black holes seem to be God’s way of saying, “Look at my power, and I made trillions upon trillions of these.” Quasars are black holes so powerful that jets of hot plasma and magnetic material shoot out light-years in the early sections of our universe. They seem to be made to be seen, and I stand in awe and reverence to our great Creator, Yahweh.
The atheist might say, “You just said, ‘Seem to be made.’” They might imply I’m seeing things with a bias for a Creator, instead of objectively.
I will say power is meaningless without being able to understand such power. Objects would cease to be objects at all, cease to have a purpose at all, if this was all some random explosion’s result from a meaningless singularity.
But I will raise the hypothetical atheist this. Why are we able to exist at all on Earth?
The answer is gravity keeps us stuck to the sphere we call home. Life here would be impossible without Earth having a gravitational influence on us.
No gravity.
No us.
We exist and have our being here because gravity pulls us toward the center of Earth. How did the universe magically know to do this?
The rational mind might think life only shaped its way this way because of the external factors at play, so of course life is based on gravity, because that’s how the universe is and we’re here.
Again, forces are meaningless in a universe without a cause. It has been made to support life, mainly us.
The Earth pulls us toward it, and we stay on.
That’s the purpose.
There may be other creatures out there among the quadrillions of stars, also held to their planets by gravity. But we’re too early in history to know for sure.
What Is the Point of Sunrise and Night Over and Over?
Keeping in the field of astronomy, why does the sun rise and set each day and make days? What is the point of it all? Why is the Earth this way? Would it mean anything if we hadn’t sprung up at all? The universe seems to be a giant clock. We sleep at night (sometimes I stay up all night, but the point stands). We work and live during the day. The sun gives us a timepiece. It is perfectly suited to the type of life on Earth. It helps us keep track of our ages and helps living beings understand the passage of time.
Nighttime turns the sun off for a spell on one side of the Earth, making all things calm and allowing us to see the stars above us. There’s no sense to any of this if it isn’t meant to be seen and help us live on Earth.
Food Is Proof of God
Think about taste for a second. There’s a reason you don’t eat bugs, right? They’re creepy-crawly beings that exist for some specific purposes on Earth.
But you would eat a pepperoni pizza (hopefully kosher pepperoni) wouldn’t you?
Why does pizza taste as it does? Why does your body react to it?
Why does flour make bread at all? In a meaningless universe, this would make no sense, and the Bible says that making bread from crops is from God Himself in multiple places. It also debunks low-carb diets (not that those are incorrect if used well), but I digress.
Speaking of diets, the complexities involved in your body making use of food are astronomically impossible. Why is this possible?
And why does food taste so amazing? It didn’t have to have a taste; you know.
Our five (arguably six) senses show us that there is a God who designed the entire human experience.
Further exploring this topic, how do the atoms in the universe know to arrange themselves into strawberries? Why is this configuration possible at all? Why aren’t we eating star dust or dirt? Why does food itself specifically exist? I know humans come up with recipes, but the key ingredients for food naturally occur on Earth.
A Little Conversation Would Be Nice
Conversation is also proof of God. Communication is how we understand each other and the world. Even my pets understand me through communication.
How do non-conscious processes know they need to interpret sound in making creatures? Why do we have ears if not meant to hear things? Why do we have mouths that dictate speech to other humans?
How do these non-conscious processes know Person B needs to hear what Person L is saying? Life would miss key points in a non-conscious-process-based universe. Telling someone you care about you miss them while they’re away from you would mean nothing at all in such a universe. The words wouldn’t reach her (or him).
Non-conscious processes can’t know how sound exists to be interpreted. Why would it matter to non-thinking matter to make such things?
Author’s note: I almost made up a word. During editing I found the word interpretated above this line. This would be meaningless to me to correct such a mistake, if I had no meaning at all in this life.
Evolution Makes Zero Sense
When I say evolution, I don’t mean changes throughout time. The commonly presented evolution of modern scientific consensus is what I have an issue with. If a bird evolved, how would the first design proto bird end up as a modern bird and survive to make flight possible? Wouldn’t the proto bird die every time it jumped off a branch or cliff side?
Wouldn’t deep-sea creatures that ended up going to lower and lower depths also be crushed by the pressure before they evolved enough to make it into current forms?
It makes zero sense.
My cute pet dog Max (who is a genius) didn’t come from a whale over millions of years. Speciation created the dog breed through time and breeding, but he is still a canine, as is the original wolf. This type of evolution makes sense.
Telling me a tyrannosaurus rex turned into a chicken is an insult to my intelligence.
Fossils are rare, and evolutionary theory bases their ideation on a fallible belief other transitional forms are there, when, in fact, there aren’t enough fossils to show evolution. They are rare, as it is, in any form.
Dinosaurs are, to quote the Book of Job, the “first of the ways of God. Only his maker (God) can bring his sword against him (giant meteor).” They existed before Adam and Eve did. God takes credit for creating dinosaurs (commonly called dragons in the ancient world). Wouldn’t a dinosaur turning into a chicken be a downgrade?
Just saying.
Philosophical Conclusion
This post is not to insult people who don’t believe in God. There are difficult things in the Scriptures that make people wonder about the goodness of God’s morality, or they might not understand why a multi-dimensional, limitless being might not show Himself to us in the open. I can’t pretend to know the mind of the LORD.
What I know is God rewards faith, and those who diligently seek Him will find Him.
For me, I know God exists as an indisputable fact because in my own life, there are answered prayers that are impossible without His intervention. And things I specifically asked for happened that only He would know because I asked Him in private prayer.
But even if this divine intervention hadn’t happened multiple times in my life, the universe as it exists would be enough for me, because, given enough time, I would have to come to that conclusion based on what I see in the world.
Too many factors are at play to make life possible here. And they can’t be random at all.
I hope this post has made you question some things, and while they aren’t empirical data points, I believe they are worthy of pondering.
May God bless you as the Sabbath starts.
May Yahweh give you peace and blessings in the name of Jesus Christ.
